The Poetry Center is offering a Residency Program opportunity for a poet to spend two to four weeks in Tucson, Arizona developing his/her work. All writers at any stage of their writing career are welcome. The residency includes a $150 stipend per week and a two-to-four-week stay in a studio apartment located within steps of the Center’s renowned library of contemporary poetry.

Guidelines

Candidates should submit a typed poetry manuscript totaling no more than ten pages. Your name and/or contact information SHOULD NOT be included on your manuscript or in the title of your submission.
File formats accepted are DOC, DOCX, PDF, and RTF files.
CV or references at this stage are not required. Should your manuscript be selected as a winner or runner up, these items will be requested.

Prize

American Kennel Club Fiction Writing Contest

The American Kennel Club Fiction Writing Contest is open for international writers of short fiction. There is a prize pool $850 and a publication of the story in AKC FAMILY DOG.

Guidelines

The contest is open to anyone except employees of the American Kennel Club and their immediate families.
Entries must be original, unpublished stories that have not been offered to or accepted by any other publisher. Only one entry per author.
The American Kennel Club retains the right to publish the three prize-winning entries in AKC FAMILY DOG, or other AKC publications.
Entries may feature either a purebred or mixed breed dog. The maximum length is 2,000 words. Entries exceeding that length will not be considered. No talking dogs, please.
Entries must be printed on 8 1⁄2" x 11" white paper, one side per page, double-spaced. Poor-quality or faded copies cannot be considered.
The author’s name, address, and phone number must appear on the first page. The author’s name and the page number must appear on each successive page.
AKC Publications cannot acknowledge receipt of manuscripts and assumes no responsibility for any entry under any circumstances. Entries will not be returned. No phone calls, please.
All acceptable entries will be read by a panel of judges selected by AKC Publications. They will choose the winners based on the style, content, originality, and appeal of the story. All decisions are final. Winners will be announced in an issue AKC FAMILY DOG in 2014.

Guidelines

The theme for this year's contest is very broad and in keeping with our editorial. We wish to explore the idea of travel as a way to not only leave behind your material and spiritual preconceptions, but to use the opportunity to open up to ideas, aesthetics, and rituals which you have internalized into your own life going forward. What did you learn during your travels and did this fundamentally transform your perception(s) of the world? Do you believe that you may have touched your hosts in ways which may have in some way transformed their views of the world as well, or is that presumptuous as a de facto "outsider" to their rituals and way of life? As always, we encourage you to approach the subject in the empathetic way in which you traveled and stayed in host countries and homes. Please weave these ideas implicitly into a narrative if this relates to one of your experiences.

We are not looking for destination pieces which describe in flowery "amazing" terms your experience, essays on the pros and cons of a postmodernist view of travel, nor are we looking for travelogues or blog-like posts which are too overly personal and self-involved to necessarily resonate with others on their own paths of discovery. We are looking for well-written inspirational pieces which will lead others to experience the sense of engagement as a global citizen.

Accompanying photos which enhance the narrative are highly preferred. Photojournalistic essays or accompanying videos will also be considered, and humor is appreciated where appropriate.

Please include an optional bio of 1-3 sentences which reference your websites, blogs, books, and contact information in the body of the submission.

TransitionsAbroad.com will publish the top three winners' entries as well as those of the selected runner-ups.

Submit an original and previously unpublished essay from 1,000 to 5,000 words. Supporting photos in .jpg or .gif format are welcome to illustrate the experience and are considered part of the essay submission. Please do not embed the photos for the travel essay in the .doc files.
To enter the Contest, attach your essay in Microsoft Word format or copy and paste it into an email as a last resort. Please include your the essay title, full name, complete postal address and phone number in both the email and Word document and add a brief bio if you so choose. The Society of Classical Poets is calling for submissions for their 2014 Poetry Competition. There is a cash prize of $500 and a publication in their journal.

Guidelines

-Submit three to five poems, each of which does not exceed 50 lines.
-Poems must be within one or more of the four themes used by the Society:

Beauty: Beauty in human nature, culture, the natural world, classical art forms, and the divine.
Great Culture: Good figures, stories, and other elements from classical (pre-1900) history and literature.
Falun Dafa: Today, this upright practice faces the worst spiritual persecution in history perpetrated by the Chinese communist regime, which is propped up by foreign investment and exports.
Humor: Clean humor only please. Also includes riddles and children’s poetry.

Metered and rhymed poetry is preferred but not required. (We usually do not publish love poems, free verse, or overly dark poems that don’t teach a positive lesson.)

In partnership with the British Council and Commonwealth Writers , the competition offers a unique opportunity for writers from all around the globe to use the immense power of radio drama to tell the stories that matter to a world audience.

Guidelines

The playwriting competition welcomes scripts from anyone outside the UK, whether established or new writers. The dramas need to be 53 minutes long, but can be on any subject.

“One foot in this world and one in the next”: that’s how J.F. Powers described the Midwestern priests he wrote about in his fiction. Description

The Brooklyn Film & Arts Festival is accepting submissions for the 2013 Brooklyn Non-Fiction Prize. Authors should send a creative non-fiction essay set in and about Brooklyn, New York and its residents. The winner will also be invited to give a reading at St. Francis College in Brooklyn.

Guidelines

Candidate's essays should be up to 2500 words written in a Word document. The submissions can be sent by email to:

Authors should include the story title, their name, email and phone number.
The submitted writings will be judged by a panel of Brooklyn writers.

Prize

The award is $500.

Runners-up will be invited to read from their writing and their entries will be included in the Brooklyn Film & Arts Festival's Brooklyn Non-Fiction Collection of stories in an online anthology.

Quirk Books' "Looking For Love" Fiction Contest is open to all professional and amateur writers worldwide. They accept novel-length manuscripts featuring love stories. As long as the stories are exceptionally original, fun and fresh, anything goes. Except vampire stories! The award is great.

Guidelines

Writers may submit only one manuscript for this contest. Here are the rules:
